Wings of Change(易.翼)
Located at the entrance of Engineering Building I, Wings of Change(2015)was sponsored by NTHU alumnus Tsai Jinbu(蔡進步)(Department of Power and Mechanical Engineering, class of 1981). This abstract sculpture conveys the notion of perpetual balanced movement. Laozi (老子) states, “All things pass from obscurity to manifestation, achieving harmony in the vital energy of the void.” The idea is that all matter is in a continual state of reciprocating motion, evolving and involving in an orderly manner which results in a kind of stability within instability. This line from Laozi was the inspiration for this sculpture, which is mounted on its stone base with a minimal contact area, so as to accentuate the dynamic rhythm of its mass as it extends into a graceful wing, conveying the idea of flight, freedom, and innovation. “Change” refers to the Dao (道). Laozi also states, “The Dao produced the one; the one produced the two; the two produced the three; the three produced all things.” The idea is that the universe is in constant motion, such that things evolve through a process of continual adjustment. Inasmuch as the Dao is the source of all things, the sculpture is meant to inspire curiosity and the spirit of exploration in all who admire it.
