Located in front of General Building II, Trace(1999)was the first of a series of sculptures donated to NTHU by award-winning sculptor Kao Tsan Hsing(高燦興). Unlike most artists working in the medium of metal, Kao personally does everything from start to finish, including the cutting, welding, and burnishing. He approaches sculpture as a kind of spiritual discipline in which he endeavors to discover the transformational possibilities of a given material and structure. The only burnishing Kao does on his sculptures is with polishing compound, leaving behind black marks and accentuating the natural color of the material.
