Dr. Mei Memorial Garden(梅園)

Within this hilltop garden is the mausoleum of Mei Yi Chi, (梅貽琦)who reestablished NTHU in Taiwan and served as its first president. The path leading up to the mausoleum is flanked by thriving juniper trees, and the surrounding slopes feature a large number of fragrant plum trees. Every year, prior to the Meichu Tournament(梅竹賽), this is where the president gives a pep talk to all the NTHU participants. Construction of Mei’s mausoleum began shortly after his death in 1962, and was designed by NTHU alumnus Chang Chang Hua(張昌華). In contrast to traditional Chinese tombs, and reflecting Mei’s unassuming character, the simple mausoleum consists of a square marble superstructure mounted on top of a concrete base occupying about 560 square meters. The Mei Garden is located at an altitude of about 120 meters above sea level, and was originally an acacia grove. The panoramic view from the top of the hill affords fine views of the campus, as well as central Hsinchu and the coast around Nanliao Village(南寮). This spacious and quiet garden has become a popular sightseeing destination, especially in January and February when the plum blossoms are at their finest.
